FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is an autonomous body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The administrative ministry for FSSAI is the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

RULES & REGULATIONS

As per Section 92 (1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI has six principal regulations which have been notified in the Gazette of India on 1st August 2011 and came into force on 5th August 20111. These regulations include:

Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011
Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011
Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations, 2011
Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues) Regulations, 2011
Food Safety and Standards (Laboratory and Sampling Analysis) Regulations, 20111 These regulations prescribe standards for various food products, licensing and registration requirements for food businesses, packaging and labeling requirements for pre-packaged foods, among other things1.

WHY FSSAI IS IMPORTANT

FSSAI is important because it is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. It ensures that the food consumed by the public is safe, hygienic and adheres to certain quality standards. FSSAI sets standards for food products, regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, and ensures that food operators follow these standards. This helps to prevent food adulteration and ensure that consumers have access to safe and wholesome food.
